Games are a great way to bond with your dog. Dogs like to hunt in packs so it is a treat for him to have you participate in some games that are similar to the “hunt.”
Put your dog in a “sit” or “stay” and toss the ball or other toy. Tell him “release” allow him to get it and encourage him to return back to you. To get it from his mouth tell him “drop it” and remove it from his mouth. You can do this by holding your hand over his muzzle and gently pushing his upper lip into his teeth this will cause the dog to open his mouth more and drop the item.
This will reinforce your dogs “stay.” Have the dog stay and take a favorite toy and hide it so he can’t see it. Return to him and tell him “release.” Enjoy watching your dog use his sniffer to locate the object.
Dogs love this game and it is a great way to give a break to a training session. Encourage the dog to take hold of the object in his mouth. When dogs play tug of war they take turns of who is winning. Allow the dog to pull the object and then you pull him with it. It ok to allow your dog to win sometimes, in dog play it is all about switching roles and taking turns winning.
